I had a great time watching Aso Ebi Diaries, a Nollywood movie directed by Biodun Stephen. This movie combines romance, drama, and the vibrant world of Aso Ebi fashion. It stars talented actors like Nancy Isime, Kunle Remi, Chizzy Alichi, and Daniel Etim Effiong. Aso Ebi Diaries is a story about love, friendship, and self-discovery, all set against the vibrant backdrop of Lagos high society.
The story follows Fari (played by Nancy Isime), whose life falls apart when her dad gets caught in a scandal that wipes out her family’s wealth. Fari moves from living the high life to struggling to make ends meet. However, she isn’t the type to give up, as she decides to fight her way back into Lagos’ elite circles. The tools at her disposal include her love for fashion and Aso Ebi styles, which she tailors to stand out. Accompanying her on the mission are her best friends, Temisan (KieKie) and Chizzy (Chizzy Alichi), and together they try to rebuild her status. However, things get messy when love enters the picture. Fari is caught between two guys: Dimeji (Kunle Remi), her loyal friend who’s always loved her, and Kitan (Daniel Etim Effiong), her childhood crush who comes back into her life with some secrets. A minor spoiler: The movie’s drama reaches its peak when Fari crashes Kitan’s engagement party, leading to a public scandal and even a courtroom battle.
The chemistry displayed by Fari and her friends hooked me because it felt so genuine. Their funny moments are relatable, and the actresses did well in the emotional parts, especially in the scenes that required them to show their flaws. Their bond is the heart of the story, and the way their friendship is tested feels so natural. The drama in the part where Chizzy and Temi fell out is very subtle and not loud. It is the kind that happens when two friends hurt each other and decide to quietly go their separate ways. Their reunion was awesome and had me rooting for them.
Nancy Isime’s portrayal of Fari was fantastic because she made me feel every bit of the character’s struggle, from her determination to her heartbreak. Another actor who deserves commendation is Kunle Remi. His character, Dimeji, is the kind of guy you want to root for because of his kindness, patience, and steadfastness. His scenes with Fari were so sweet, and their romance felt real, not forced.
Don’t expect anything superb in terms of cinematography, colour grading, and lighting. However, the lack of abundance in those artistic aspects doesn’t detract from the feel-good movie that Aso Ebi Diaries is. It is a movie I recommend for lovers of Aso Ebi fashion, as it showcases superb female styles. It gets a 6/10.
