British-Nigerian heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua finished opponent, Alexander Povetkin to retain his heavyweight titles at the Wembley stadium on Saturday night.
Joshua knocked out his Russian rival at the seventh round to maintain his 22 fights, 22 victories status as world champion with three heavyweight titles, WBA, WBO and IBF.
Although Joshua was left with a bloodied nose in the first round of the fight, his confidence spiked as he took on the older and more experienced Povetkin who up until this fight had never been knocked out in his entire professional career.
He delivered an uppercut in the fourth round that left Povetkin not only with a broken left eyelid but vulnerable as Joshua landed more shots in the fifth and sixth rounds.
Joshua said of his rival who is 11 years older, “Povetkin is a very tough challenger, he proved that with good left hooks and counter punches. I came in here to have fun, and give it my best. I knew he was strong to the head but weak to the body. I was just mixing it up. It could have been seven, maybe nine, maybe 12 rounds to get him out of there, but the ultimate aim was to be victorious.”
The champion walked away with 20 million pounds from the fight.
