I just finished watching Something Like Gold, and it ruined my mood. Kayode Kasum directed the movie and this is the first of his films that gets a thumbs down from me.
Something Like Gold tells the story of Tamara Jola-Scott, a spoiled lady from a wealthy home who was shocked when she was dumped by her man on her wedding day. Her dad was also arrested on the same day, losing his wealth in the process due to a corruption case against him. And thus began a new chapter for Tamara.
I got sick of continuing the movie right from the opening scenes. This was due to the continued emphasis on the name Tamara Jola-Scott. The name kept on getting repeated by the characters as if mentioning it once wouldn’t be enough to make viewers associate it with opulence.
Something Like Gold is something that can dumb you down if you are the type that loves dialogue-driven shows. As I mentioned earlier, my mood changed when I saw the movie. This was simply because I saw the movie after seeing a Hollywood movie, Daddio. The Hollywood movie only had two characters who dialogued inside a cab throughout 96 per cent of the movie’s time. I was blown away by the dialogue and the acting, only for that excitement to be stolen away by Something Like Gold.
Something Like Gold casts Teniola Aladese, Segun Arinze, Patrick Doyle, Timini Egbuson, Waliu Fagbemi, Nahna James,Salami Bela Maureen, Bukky Ogunnote, Mercy Johnson Okojie, Ebere Doris Okorie, Sandra Okunzuwa, Tope Olowoniyan, Kunle Remi and Broda Shaggi.
Something Like Gold is just another Nollywood movie that will end up leaving no impact on a viewer. If I thought I was watching a comedy, the film didn’t make me laugh. If I thought I was seeing some emotional picture, no emotional response was drawn from me. The acting is too dramatic and unreal. Such can only be pulled off on stage. This movie is the umpteenth Nollywood film that features Broda Shaggi acting like his comedy skit character. Is it that he cannot play any other role? If directors feel they must use him in their movies, then the name of his character in the movie should be Broda Shaggi. That way, viewers will see the movie as one that has Broda Shaggi appearing as himself and won’t be bothered seeing the same acting in every movie. It will be similar to having Baba Suwe starring as Baba Suwe in the Yoruba movies of the 90s and early 2000s.
The choice of characters is not impressive. The rich girl, Tamara, looked nothing like a rich kid. She looked more ghetto than those in the ghetto she stayed with when she fell from grace to grass. Sandra Okunzuwa, who starred as Tamara, did a poor job because of her overacting which couldn’t prompt any emotional response from me.
Cinematography-wise, I’ll advise intending viewers to not expect much but to enjoy the show if they are into such movies. This movie gets a 4/10.
