Reports have emerged that President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Abubakar Adamu Mohammed as the new Inspector-General of Police.
Outgoing Inspector-General Ibrahim Idris was said to have met with the president at the State House on Monday afternoon. This visit is said to be a tradition for outgoing inspectors-general in recent years.
The presidency had shortlisted the name of the Assistant Inspector General of Police from Nasarawa State as a possible replacement of the retiring Inspector-General of Police Ibrahim Idris.
“We have a new police IG,” a senior officer told PREMIUM TIMES Monday night. “Ibrahim Idris has gone home to move his things from the official quarters and we are now waiting for a formal handing over.”
Adamu was AIG in charge of Zone 5 Benin before he was sent to the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru in Plateau State.
He is also known within police circles as Adamu Mohammed Lafia, in reference to his place of birth, which is the Nasarawa State capital.
Mr Mohammed was born on November 9, 1961. He enlisted in the police in 1986. He has a bachelors degree in geography.
He was said to have been sent on the compulsory course on the suspicion that he was pencilled down by the presidency to succeed the outgoing IGP.
Many Nigerians have kicked the against an alleged move by President Muhammadu Buhari to extend the tenure of the outgoing IGP, basing their allegations on the notion that there are plans to use Idris’s influence to manipulate the presidential election scheduled for February 2019.
