More details emerge on the resumption of Lagos schools for August 3

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, has announced August 3 as resumption date for students in transitional classes in the state.

Announcing the date at a media briefing on Friday, the governor said the resumption is for those in SSS 3.

According to the governor, the decision was taken after a meeting with stakeholders in the education sector.

He, however, clarified that though schools would be reopened for the transitional classes on August 3, students in Senior Secondary School three and Technical School three would resume first.

The dates for the revision classes and examination for pupils in Junior Secondary School Three (JSS 3) will be announced in due course, Sanwo-Olu said.

He noted that Primary Six pupils will be graded by their already recorded Continuous Assessment (CA) to pass over to secondary schools.

The Governor stated that the decision was taken after a meeting with stakeholders in the education sector.

He asked school authorities in the transitional classes to ensure adequate preparation for resumption ahead of August 3.

Governor Sanwo-Olu however clarified that;

Our tertiary institutions are to continue their online academic activities which are at various advanced stages. For Primary Six, we are using Continuous Assessment to determine how they graduate into JSS 1. We are doing this to slow down risk factors and manage the situation in measure.

He stressed that;

SS3 and TECH three students are to start; for JSS3, and primary six they will wait for about a week or two before resumption. This permitted opening will for only day schooling. No boarding activities are permitted during this time. School authorities are expected to prepare well from now till August 3.

The governor directed that operators of public spaces and offices should deny entry to anyone without a mask.

It would be recalled that Federal Government on June 29 approved the ‘safe reopening’ of schools nationwide.

The nationwide reopening of schools is meant to allow students in Primary 6, Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS 3) and Senior Secondary school 3 (SSS 3) resume preparation for examinations.

However, all daycares and primary schools are to remain closed till further evaluation.

Schools across the country have been shut down since March in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

In addition, the Governor has directed that hairdressing salons that had been accredited by the Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC) could open in strict on appointment-only only and with a maximum occupancy of 50 per cent of the total floor space at any given time.

Sports facilities and recreational parks in residential estates, Sanwo-Olu said, would be permitted to operate with a maximum of 20 persons at any given time.

However, places of worship, events centres, and social clubs will remain closed until further notice.

The Governor directed civil servants from Grade Level 1 to 12 to continue working from home and improve themselves through dedicated online Learning Management Systems (LMS) portals.

He said the enforcement agencies would start to arrest people found in public places without face masks, adding that defaulters will be prosecuted.
