Why is Tinubu referred to as Asiwaju or Jagaban of Lagos?

Bola Tinubu holds several chieftaincy titles bestowed upon him by people who believe he is deserving due to his role in their affairs. Of all the titles bestowed upon him, Asiwaju or Jagaban are the most commonly used. “Asiwaju” is a Yoruba title that carries the weight of Yoruba ethical principles. It translates as “the one who leads.” The title was bestowed upon him in recognition of his contributions to the development of Lagos State during his tenure as governor. As a result, he is known as the Asiwju of Lagos State.

The title Jagaban appears to be synonymous with Asiwaju. Tinubu received it on February 26, 2006, from the Emir of Borgu in Niger State, Hrh Alh. (Senator) Haliru Dantoro Kitoro III. While announcing the Jagaban of Borgu and Yun Bana Jagaban of Borgu, the emir turbaned him and his wife, Senator Remi Tinubu.

In an excerpted speech, the emir revealed that the title bestowed upon the Asiwaju was his way of recognizing and thanking him (the emir) for his legal assistance during the Emirship squabble with the Nigerian government. While the title can be translated as ‘Boss of Bosses’ in many contexts, the emir stated that in his kingdom, it means ‘Leader of Warriors.’ It can also refer to someone in charge, powerful, and influential in the streets, a neighbourhood, or an industry.

Tinubu’s Family (Wife and Children)

Ahmed Bola Tinubu is married since 1987 which is over 3 decades to the love of his life Oluremi Tinubu, the incumbent senator of the Lagos Central senatorial district.

The first three are from the previous marriage while the rest are from his marriage to Oluremi. All of the children are fully grown and excel in their respective careers. More so, Tinubu is also family to Adewale Tinubu (Nephew), the CEO of Oando.

  • Instituted a reform plan that helped to improve the welfare of judicial officers, including magistrates
  • Upgraded facilities at the Lagos State Teaching Hospital (LASUTH)

Tinubu’s Relevance in the APC

Bola Tinubu is currently the National Leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC) – a party he formed along with Muhammadu Buhari in 2015. The party’s primary goal was to build a stronger party that would eliminate the ruling party Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), during the 2015 general election.

Tinubu’s initial target was to run as Buhari’s vice-presidential candidate but later conceded for his ally and former justice commissioner, Yemi Osibanjo. 2015 saw Tinubu’s dreams of destroying the then-ruling PDP came through as Buhari rode the APC to victory, ending the sixteen-year rule of the PDP and marking the first time in the history of Nigeria that an incumbent president lost to an opposition candidate.

The APC defeated the PDP a second time in the 2019 general election through his campaign effort. The ‘Jagaban,’ Bola Tinubu is rated as one of the most influential politicians in Africa in the 21st century. His firm and resolute style of politics has helped him attain several accomplishments.

One of his most outstanding achievements would be the number of politicians who served under his tutelage. They include Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, the vice president of Nigeria; Babatunde Raji Fashola, Minister of Power, Works, and Housing and one-time governor of Lagos State; Rauf Aregbesola, Osun State governor, among others.

Little wonder he is believed to have surpassed Chief Awolowo’s political record. The former gave life to the Yoruba race through his free education program. However, the latter is considered to have achieved greater success as the first Yoruba politician, whose party, while in the opposition, defeated a ruling party in a presidential election, thereby controlling the central government.

At the age of 40, Bola Tinubu began his political career in 1992.

Bola Tinubu has always been a man endowed with natural leadership abilities. As a young man, he had a passion for politics, so he participated in departmental politics during his school years. In his final year at the University, he even ran for and won his first political office as President of the Accounting Society. Tinubu participated in financial contributions and fund-raising for community development programs in Lagos State while working for Mobil Oil after returning to his home country. He was even known to lead the Primrose Group, a political action organization that advocated for fundamental changes in Lagos State politics.

Bola’s formal political career began in 1992, when he ran for and was elected to the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing the Lagos West constituency. Tinubu’s political career officially began when he was 40, based on his birth date of March 17, 1952. Following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election, Bola Tinubu and other Nigerians formed the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). This group advocated for the restoration of democracy and the recognition of the June 12 results.

Bola Tinubu went into exile in 1994 and returned in 1998 after Sani Abacha died. Bola Tinubu ran for governor of Lagos State in 1999 and was elected on the Alliance for Democracy platform (AD). On May 29, 1999, he was sworn in as the second Executive Governor of Lagos State, a day he described as “special.” He was re-elected for a second term in April 2003, after his first term had expired. During Tinubu’s tenure as governor of Lagos State, he made several decisions that aided the state’s economic and infrastructure development.

He invested heavily in education and returned many schools to their former owners; initiated new road construction needed to meet the needs of the State’s fast-growing population; and fought with the Federal government over whether Lagos State had the right to create new Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) to meet the needs of its large population. The federal government seized funds intended for state local councils due to the controversy. Despite the odds, he was able to create 37 LCDAs.

Tinubu’s tenure as Lagos State Governor ended on May 29, 2007, when the Action Congress’ Babatunde Fashola took office. Bola Tinubu was brought before the Code of Conduct Tribunal after leaving office as governor of Lagos State for the alleged illegal operation of 16 separate foreign accounts. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission cleared him and Delta State Governors James Ibori and Obong Victor Attah of all charges two years later (EFCC).

Tinubu’s Political Career and Offices Held:

  • 1992 – Elected Federal Republic of Nigeria Senator for the Lagos West constituency.
  • National Democratic Coalition was founded in 1993. (NADECO)
  • From 1999 to 2003, he served as the second Executive Governor of Lagos State.
  • 2003-2007- Began and completed his second term as Governor of Lagos State.

What is the Real Name of Bola Tinubu?

Bola Tinubu’s real name is: Yekini Amoda Ogunlere from Iragbiji Osun State. That is what is contained in his primary and secondary school certificates and that’s why he has refused to tender them before INEC.”

It was discovered that the claim had once gone viral on nairaland in August 2014 and is only being recirculated.

On Twitter, a user @Officialmanny4 had also alleged that, “Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s real name as contained in his primary school certificate is ‘Yekini Amoda Ogunlere’ from Iragbiji Osun state. He changed to Tinubu after being wanted for drugs related crime in the 70s in US. That’s why he didn’t tender them (the certificates) to INEC.”

Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had on Friday published the personal particulars of 16 presidential candidates and their running mates who will be contesting the 2023 presidential election.

Tinubu did not provide any information on his primary and secondary education neither did he attach certificates for his tertiary education.
Instead, he attached an affidavit to the INEC form where he claimed that his certificates were stolen after he went on exile during the late General Sani Abacha era.

The affidavit reads:

I went on self-exile from October 1994 to October 1998. When I returned, I discovered that all my property, including all the documents relating to my qualifications and my certificates in respect of paragraph three above, were looted by unknown persons.
My house was a target of series of searches by various security agents from the time the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was forced to adjourn following the military takeover of government of 17th November, 1993.
I was the chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, banking and finance. I was also a plaintiff in one of the two suits against the interim national government in 1993.
I went on exile when it became clear to me that my life was in danger,” Tinubu said in his claim.

However, Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia, didn’t capture any previous change in Tinubu’s name.
Nigerians have been reacting to Tinubu’s inability to state the names of schools he attended and produce copies of his certificates.

This claim is believed to have fuelled such speculations that he either did not school as presumed or he is hiding some details about himself that could mar his chances in the forthcoming election.

There is no sufficient evidence to support the claim that Bola Ahmed Tinubu changed his name in the past for whatever reasons and he has always held that he is from Lagos State.

Where is Bola Tinubu Originally from?

Many people may mistake Lagos for the Asiwaju’s native home because of his popularity in Nigeria’s commercial heart. Bola Tinubu is a native of Osun State. He is the son of Abibatu Mogaj, a well-known Nigerian business magnate who served as the Association of Nigerian Market Women and Men’s yál’jà.

How Old is Tinubu’s First Son?

From previous relationships, he fathered three children: Kazeem Olajide Tinubu (12 October 1974 – 31 October 2017), Folashade Tinubu (born 17 June 1976), and Oluwaseyi Tinubu (born 13 October 1985), whose mother is rumoured to be the former air hostess and prophetess Bunmi Oshonike.

How Many Wives Does Tinubu Have?

As of May 2022, Bola Tinubu is married to Oluremi Tinubu, an RCCG pastor and senator. The couple met through Oluremi’s elder sister. According to Oluremi, she saw kindness in Tinubu’s eyes and that was the attraction for her.

Oluremi told TVC News:

“What I saw in him was his eyes. I saw the kindness in his eyes. I would say that was what really attracted me”

Tinubu and his wife Remi got married in 1987. However, there are reports that she is not the first wife of Tinubu.

Bola Tinubu Fist Wife

Bola Tinubu allegedly married his first wife, who also happened to be the mother of his first two children. She died in 2018 after suffering a cardiac arrest, according to sources. Tinubu’s first wife is largely unknown because the former Lagos State governor has never publicly admitted to having an ex-wife.
