Joe Biden, the president of the United States, announced $150 million in funding for climate adaptation initiatives in Africa on Friday.
He announced it while speaking at the ongoing Conference of Parties (COP27), also known as the climate summit, which is taking place in Egypt.
The future of the world depends on halting climate change, said Mr. Biden, who also said there is no excuse for not funding clean energy in developing nations.
“To permanently bend the emission curve, every nation has to step up,” he said.
America has joined a group of countries that have pledged money to address climate change adaptation issues in Africa, including the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.
Although it contributes the least to global emissions, Africa may be the continent most severely impacted by the effects of climate change.
Millions of people are currently affected by disasters related to “storms, droughts, wildfires, floods, and landslides on the continent,” according to statistics from pertinent international organizations.
