After the establishment of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), former President Obasanjo appointed Ribadu as the pioneer chairman in 2003.

As EFCC Chairman, Ribadu prosecuted high-profile cases of fraud and money laundering among politicians, bankers and businessmen.

Ribadu charged ex-governors, ministers, senators, Commissioners of Police and prominent bankers for fraud and money laundering. He secured 270 convictions.

EFCC jailed former Inspector General of Police Tafa BALOGUN for £150 million fraud. However, he had to return the money in a plea bargain.

In 2007, he received a reappointment as the chairman of EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission). Furthermore, he was promoted to the position of Assistant Inspector General of Police. Upon swearing in of late Yar’Adua as president, he said the promotion of Ribadu as AIG is null and void and unconstitutional.

In August 2008, the Nigerian Police, through the Police Service Commission in Nigeria, demoted Ribadu to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police.

While Ribadu was on the verge of graduating from the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, the organizers abruptly halted the event and instructed him to leave the hall, despite him already being seated.

The Nigerian Police Service Commission dismissed him from the Nigerian Police Force in December 2008. Ribadu left Nigeria in 2009 and assumed a fellowship at the Center for Global Development.
