Born Robert Sylvester Kelly on the 8th of January in 1967 in Chicago, he was the third of four siblings to a single mother, Joanne. His mother was a singer, and his father had no role to play in his life due to his constant absence.
For most of his childhood, Kelly and his family lived hand to mouth. At the age of eight, he started singing in the church choir. This was also the time when he had a girlfriend for the first time. He lost her forever in a tragic incident when she fell into a river and was taken away by the fast current. Her dead body was found later; Kelly claims her to be his first inspiration for music. Kelly also suffered sexual abuse by an older woman at a young age and revealed it in his autobiography.
