Former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been finally confirmed as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization.

Her confirmation happened at the General Council’s special meeting, after a thorough selection process involving eight qualified candidates from around the world.

Ngozi’s appointment was announced on the official Twitter handle of the World Trade Organisation, WTO.

The Tweets reads, “Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala from Nigeria is appointed as the next WTO Director-General.

“Her term starts on the 1st of March 2021.”

The former minister of finance is the first African and woman to head the Organisation since its creation.

Read the tweet below;

Ngozi’s appointment as the World Trade Organisation DG was faced with hiccups following the non-endorsement from the Former United States Of American President, Donald Trump.

The seat of the WTO DG was between her and South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee, who later stepped down from the race when Ngozi got the United States newly elected president, Joe Biden.

Yoo concludes to step down from the race after she admits to having spoken to several world leaders, including the US, and was advised to quit the race.

Following Yoo’s withdrawal from the competition, the organization finally selected Dr. Iweala as the new Director-General since she is now the sole contender for the office.
