About eight people were reportedly killed in Damasak in Borno State when a fighter jet providing cover for ground troops missed its target.
The fighter jet fired at a family holding a naming ceremony for their new born baby, killing the new baby, both parents and five guests.
Ambassador Ahmed Shehu, the Executive Director Civil Liberty Organisation, made this known on Monday.
He cautioned the military to be careful about civilian casualties in the ongoing fight against insurgents in the North East.
Shehu explained that in a bid to provide reinforcement to the ground troops, the fighter jet of the Nigerian Air Force, NAF, lost its target firing on an innocent family in Damasak town who were joyously celebrating the naming ceremony of their newborn baby.
He said “The lost target claimed the life of the baby, his both parents and five other well wishers who came to celebrate.”
“Many of such missed targets have frequently occurred in the ongoing counter insurgency operations, people lost their lives, properties and loved ones through missed targets of Airstrike.”
“This scenario and lots of others were the unfolding experiences when armed men suspected to be insurgents attacked Damasak local Government area of Borno state on Saturday evening.”
