As Nigerians mark the second anniversary of the EndSars protest which claimed the lives of many on the 20th of October 2020, Nollywood actor, Alex Ekubo has shared his candid opinion about the fees charged at the tollgate.
Kemi Filani news recalls that back in October 2020, army operatives had opened fire at unarmed protesters at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos. Following the uproar, a panel tagged ‘The Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses’ otherwise referred to as EndSARS panel was instituted and led by Justice Doris Okuwobi
On Monday, November 15, 2021, the panel submitted a 309-page report to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. In the report, the panel noted that at least nine persons were confirmed dead at the Lekki toll gate, when soldiers stormed the tollgate to disperse EndSARS protesters on October 20, 2020.
Following the back and forth after the report was submitted, the government announced in March this year that the Lekki Concession Company (LCC) in charge of the tollgate would resume tolling activities by April. This was however rejected by the frontliner of the protest.

In commemoration of the tragic event, Ekubo said the tollgate should be remained ‘Lekki Memorial Way’ and it should remain free forever because Nigerians paid in full with their blood.
Meanwhile, he sent a message to the government stating that ‘20-10-20‘ will never be forgotten.
He wrote: Dear Nigerian Government, we will NEVER forget this day. 20 – 10 – 20. We will return the favour. The Labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain. I still maintain, Lekki Toll plaza should be renamed Lekki Memorial Way & remain toll free forever.

Memorial walk
Celebrities such as Mr. Macaroni, Flaz, Rinu and others shared information about the second anniversary of the tragic event.
According to them, a memorial procession will be held in the honour of those who dies from 8am to 11am. They urged nigerians to walk and drive through the tollgate, blast horns, sing, chant and wave the Nigerian flag in unison. Nigerians are however warned not to bring any political materials to the venue.
