Nigerian Celebrities and the Proliferation of ‘Cheap’ Honorary Degrees

Nigerian Celebrities and the Proliferation of ‘Cheap’ Honorary Degrees

A strange trend has been observed in the Nigerian entertainment industry recently: a rise in the quantity of celebrities acquiring honorary degrees, frequently from universities that are perceived by critics as offering “cheap” and unqualified honorary degrees. This phenomenon has spurred discussions on the merits of these awards and the legitimacy of the universities that grant them.

An honorary degree is often conferred as a way of honouring a distinguished person+’s contributions to a specific field or to society in general. It is sometimes recommended that such degrees be listed in one’s curriculum vitae (CV) as an award, and not in the education section. However, every Nigerian celebrity who go the award tend to attach the prefix, “Dr.” to their name.

Honorary degrees, traditionally reserved for individuals with exceptional contributions to society, have become increasingly popular among Nigerian celebrities. These accolades, often bestowed by lesser-known institutions in countries like Benin Republic and Togo, raise questions about the criteria for receiving such honors and their legitimacy.

The latest celebrities on the long list of this allegedly purchased award are Nollywood Yoruba Actors Adedimeji Lateef and Gabriel Afolayan, who were conferred with PhD Honoris Causa in Arts and Culture by The Estam University, Benin Republic.

Big Brother Naija’s Chukwuemeka Okoye, better known as Frod, also recently jumped on the trend, and changed his name to “Dr Chukwuemeka” after bagging an honorary degree.

The Appeal of the ‘Dr.’ Title: Prestige or Posturing?

The allure of being addressed as “Dr.” can be powerful, conferring a sense of prestige and recognition. Celebrities may see honorary degrees as a way to enhance their public image and gain respect beyond their entertainment careers.

In the age of social media, the ‘Dr.’ title can be a status symbol, garnering attention and validation. Celebrities often share these achievements on their platforms, influencing public perception and reinforcing their status as influential figures.

Are These Degrees Legitimate?

Some institutions conferring honorary degrees on celebrities are criticized for having questionable accreditation and standards. Critics argue that the pursuit of these degrees may compromise the integrity of the academic honor.

The sheer volume of celebrities receiving honorary degrees, especially from less-established institutions, raises concerns about the potential dilution of the prestige associated with such accolades.

Beyond Titles

As the trend of Nigerian celebrities receiving ‘cheap’ honorary degrees continues, it prompts a broader reflection on the evolving landscape of recognition in the entertainment industry. Celebrities, institutions, and the public alike must engage in meaningful conversations about the value of education and the responsibilities that come with honorary titles.

While the pursuit of honorary degrees is not inherently negative, the authenticity of the recognition should be prioritized. True worth, after all, is not solely defined by titles but by the meaningful impact one has on society, irrespective of academic honors.
