Travelling alone isn’t always depressing and pitiful. It can be enjoyable because there is no one to accommodate or watch out for.
You’re just you, and you’re free to do whatever you want (sounds good?). However, you won’t be able to enjoy a pleasant trip unless you know what you’re capable of.
So, here are five essential tips for solo travellers:
Make a Plan
Plan ahead of time by researching your destination. Before you travel anywhere, make sure you have all of the necessary information.
When assessing the environment, the knowledge comes in handy. Learn about common tourist scams in the area, how to get around (transportation), the types of food available, local customs, dress codes, religious beliefs, and the rules and regulations that govern the inhabitants. Make a few reservations ahead of time, such as lodging.
Consider learning some travel skills before you go, such as how to read a map and use a compass. It’s also helpful to know a few phrases in the local language if it’s not your native tongue.
Pack Light
Remember to only bring what you absolutely need. When you travel alone, there is no one to watch your belongings if you need to take a break or dash off to somewhere.
It is critical that your luggage be light enough to move around with. Cash, credit cards, your passport or ID card, a camera, travel size toiletries, and clothes are all must-haves. Aside from the benefit of increased mobility, light luggage will save you money.
Blend In
You are always most vulnerable when you are not on your home turf, so knowing how and when to blend in is critical. In theory, women should be able to dress however they want wherever they go, but this is simply not realistic in this case. Take visual notice of what others around you are wearing and emulate them.
When necessary, dress conservatively or like a local. This could include covering your hair, cutting out your trousers, wearing long sleeves or loose clothing, and so on. It is critical that you do this so that you do not draw undue attention to yourself.
Take Caution
It may not appear fair, but if you are a woman, especially a young woman, you must be far more cautious and watch yourself and your surroundings. You employ common sense and rely on your instincts. Don’t take any chances! Read situations carefully, and if you feel uncomfortable or nervous, leave. If you don’t trust someone, don’t tell them you’re alone.
Do not mention where you are staying, especially if you are feeling uneasy. It is not impolite to be cautious. Take care of your belongings. When you’re out in public, keep your bag close to your body and your zips closed at all times.
If you must drink, drink for pleasure rather than to get wasted. Most importantly, walk confidently while remaining aware of your surroundings. When traveling alone, keep in mind that you are the only eyes and ears to ensure your safety and the safety of your belongings.
Maintain Contact
Make a list of all emergency contacts, including your bank, credit card company, insurance company, lawyer, workplace, and, if you are out of the country, your country’s embassies.
Also, keep in touch with family and friends so they know you’re safe. When traveling alone, social media is an invaluable resource. A quick check-in at a new location or a quick photo upload will help keep your family and friends back home informed of where you are, what you are doing, and that you are safe.
It is a good idea to give one selected friend or family member a copy of your travel itinerary ahead of time, including your flight numbers, accommodations, and a general schedule of where you will be on which dates, as well as information on your travel insurance, credit cards, and bank account number. Allowing others to know where and when you will be traveling is a great safety net.
