Nigeria is a multifaceted society with an impressive number of tribes and traditions that will take ages to study. Each individual tribe has their own traditional outfit and even though some of them are similar to each other, none of them share the same style of colors with another. In appreciation of the diversity in the tribes of Nigeria, this article will explore six outfits from various tribes in Nigeria.
1 The first tribe we have here is one of the top three tribes in Nigeria, and this dress is commonly worn among their women during ceremonial events. One thing that makes the Igbo traditional attire is the suede material that is used to make it, and the lion head stamps all over it. In this picture, fashion influencer Diana Eneje styled hers into a dress made from red suede material. She also added a bow tie in front, and she wore traditional Igbo red beads around her neck and in her hair.
2 Second on the list, we have the Tiv traditional outfit, which is called the ‘ańgér’. It is basically a black and white material which is woven out of wool and refined if desired. The Tiv people are known for including white or black horse tails to their traditional regalia, as it represents their tribal colors.
3 Third on the list the Yoruba traditional attire, and this is just one of them because they have quite a number of traditional attires. This one is known as the ‘aso-ibile’, and it was style into a cute skirt, and a top that was styled into the popular ‘bubu’ style. Also, a golden colored ‘gele’ was added to the outfit to complete the look. Yoruba people are known for their elaborate headgear, which is called the ‘gele’, and this is one of the staple pieces of the Yoruba traditional attire.
4 The Fulani people of Nigeria are considered as one of the largest tribes in the country, and even though they are often mistaken as the Hausa tribe, they have their own separate culture and tradition. In this picture, you can see actress Nancy Isime in a traditional Fulani attire, which consists of a two-piece made out of a material that is similar to calico material. The top of the Fulani attire is usually designed with woven and colorful details that represents their cultural heritage. Beads also play a huge role in their attire, as they wear a lot of them.
5 In this final picture, we have the Efik tribe of Cross-River state. This is the official spoken language among the Cross-River people of Nigeria. Their traditional attire is very rich and colorful, which makes them one of the most unique tribes in Nigeria, and Nancy Isime’s outfit here fully represented their culture.
