News reports have revealed the murder-suicide of a Cambodian soldier and his 16-year-old wife.
According to the reports by local media, the military officer identified as Vong Tol, shot his wife after refusing to grant her request for a divorce before turning his AK 47 on himself.
A district penal police officer, Captain Chuon Narong, while confirming the incident, said, “Second Lt. Vong Tol, 32, shot his wife, Uy Sokhom, in the chest in their home in the northern province of Preah Vihear on Sunday before shooting himself in the head.
“He was angry with the wife for wanting to divorce him.”
Narong told the Times that the neighbors overheard the soldier accusing his wife of infidelity, which she denied as they argued bitterly.
“The neighbours did not intervene because they regularly heard the pair fighting.
“The couple was married for about a year and did not have children,” Narong added.
Tol reportedly worked at the provincial military base while his wife had been a farmer in the area.
