The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned one Onovo Osita Malachy at the Federal High Court sitting in Benin City, Edo State, over a $140, 000 fraud.
The suspect who appeared in court on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, was arraigned on a one-count charge bothering on obtaining by false pretence.
Instablog9ja reports that the suspect fraudulently obtained the sum of $140,000 from a foreigner through a love scam.
The suspect reportedly pleaded guilty to the charge, after which the defense counsel, I. U. Uchechukwu, urged the court to temper justice with mercy as the defendant “has become remorseful”.
Justice A. A. Demi-Ajayi who presided over the case, ordered that the suspect be sentenced to 12 months in prison.
Demi-Ajayi also ordered that the convict forfeit all assets in his name, including an uncompleted building and a Toyota Camry 2007 model, to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
