Thinline is a Nollywood drama directed by Akay Mason which I think was predictable and didn’t leave me much to anticipate.
However, I must commend the casting for delivering believable performances, especially in the comedy aspect of the movie, which also has a bit of action.
Thinline stars notable actors like Abdulgafar Abiola, Adeniyi Johnson, Iyabo Ojo, Mercy Aigbe, OlaiyaIgwe, Prisma James, Uche Montana, Uzor Arukwe, Yekini Ibrahim, and Yvonne Jegede to mention a few.
The movie tells the story of Pastor Raymond who is being blackmailed by a prostitut* whom he had affair with. Being a pastor known for his spirit-filled sermons, Raymond lives with the fear of being exposed and disgraced because of his sins.
First of all, this storyline is nothing original and has been played out several times by Nollywood. The directors ought to have made their own edition quite brilliant, with intrigues and necessary twists to make anyone forget that it was a rehashed story they delivered.
While the movie may appear to be Christian, it ridicules Christianity. How do you explain Pastor Raymond having DG-style sX with a prostitut* and then speaking in tongues later on? The movie brought the office of the pastor to disrepute. I can imagine the outrage from the Islamic community if their religion is tampered with in such a way.
The movie taught me one good lesson—everything is not as it appears to be. People are very quick to judge what they don’t know. A man might be good all his life, but one wrong decision can destroy him, and people who are worse than him will be proud to condemn him.
One scene in the movie I enjoyed was the long interrogation in the station. The movement from one suspect to the other and the dialogue was topnotch.
Ebun Oloyede and Ibrahim Yekini held down the comedy aspect of this movie. Their acting effortlessly amused the audience at the cinema.
Thinline is not the kind of film that is expected to deliver great performances from the actors. But the directors scored well with the cast, and I must say Uzor Arukwe did well as Pastor Raymond. Yvonne Jegede’s role as a prostitut* was also outstanding.
This film is not big on technical aspects, and it delivers something just a bit better than what was obtainable in the old Nollywood. I’ll be surprised if it ends up on any of the major streaming platforms asides YouTube.
The costumes are what you get in a normal, everyday setting; nothing is flamboyant. However, what was delivered suits the story.
In a nutshell, Thinline is an average movie that I can only recommend to people who have nothing else to see. Apart from the lesson I learnt, the movie didn’t leave any other mark on me. It gets a 5/10.
