Boomplay Ghana Recap 2022: Black Sherif, Sarkodie, others top list: Boomplay, a streaming service with an emphasis on Africa, has released its year-end report, which lists the top-grossing artists, albums, and songs on the service in 2022.
The report, Boomplay Recap, provides information on the most popular musical compositions by male and female performers throughout many African nations, including Ghana.
Black Sherif finished the year as the #1 male artist in Ghana, a feat he repeated on rival digital service provider Spotify after reaching 100 million streams on the platform in September. Lasmid and Shatta Wale respectively follow him.
According to Boomplay’s data from the previous year, Black Sherif was the nation’s largest discovery. This is mostly because of his songs “Second Sermon” and “First Sermon,” which were the two fastest-rising tracks to surpass 1 million plays.
The most streamed Ghanaian song of 2022 was “Friday Night” by Lasmid, followed by “Kwaku the Traveller” by Black Sherif and “Down Flat” by Kelvyn Boy.
Black Sherif’s The Villain I Never Was, Sarkodie’s No Pressure, and Kwesi Arthur’s Son of Jacob are the top three most streamed albums of 2022.
In that order, Wendy Shay, Gyakie, and Diana Hamilton are the top three female artists; the same group dominated the category on the platform the year before.
Due to its 88 million monthly active users, Boomplay claims that streaming on the site climbed by 248% in 2022. Additionally, it claimed to have a library of more than 90 million songs.
“The authenticity and relevance of Boomplay’s data and charts as the accurate picture of music consumption are based on Boomplay’s user base, which is largely the lower and middle-class demographic, the largest population segment on the continent. Thus, it is more inclusive and captures the on-the-ground music taste and habits of music consumers,” the company said.
