Dr. Abubakar Musa, a medical expert, has counseled the electorate on how to manage stress during the election process by adopting a healthy lifestyle and avoiding standing in long lines.
This was said by him during an interview he gave to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Bauchi.
Election stress and anxiety, according to Musa, who works at the Department of Public Health at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBU-TH), portend negative effects on health.
He advised voters to avoid going to the polls on an empty stomach or without breakfast because doing so could cause headaches, low blood sugar, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating.
The medical expert said those with underlying ailments should adhere to all treatment and safety tips to avoid further complications.
“Take fluid and avoid staying under sun, especially during sunny hours, it is good to stay under shade during the election.
”Those that faint on queues should be given first aid with damp towel or refer to the nearest health facility,” he said.
Musa said the electorate should exhibit jovial mood, remain calm and relax as well as express joy and sadness with caution to avoid stressing the body’s hormones.
“Adrenaline is a stress hormone that has to do with anxiousness, nervousness or pure excitement as your body and mind are preparing for an event,” he added.
He further urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure adequate ventilation at the polling centres across the country to enhance safety of voters. (NAN)
