The Nigeria Police has denied rumours claiming that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was saturated with bombs.
The speculation was in connection with the terror alert issues by the United States on possible attack in Abuja.
In a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police decried instances where individuals who are “presumed to be peace ambassadors and patriotic agents of national unity in Nigeria” are spreading falsehood.
The statement read, “I dont think it will do our country any good to continually spread such fearful rumours to further create more panic to citizens and residents of the FCT and Nigeria at large.
“We still reiterate that the Federal Capital Territory is safe and there is no imminent threat. Neither is the FCT being saturated with bombs as speculated in the news. We therefore urge residents of the FCT and Nigerians at large to disregard this fake news which was purportedly sponsored to create fear in our people and heat up the polity.
“We will continue to adopt all effective operational strategies to decimate the activities of non-state actors and other criminal elements in the country.”
Buhari breaks silence on UK, US terror alerts in Abuja
President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians that there is no need to panic over terror alerts raised over possible attacks in parts of the country.
He stated this in reaction to the security alerts issued by the US and the UK.
According to a statement by Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, Buhari added that the travel advisories doesn’t mean an attack is imminent.
“Nigeria is no exception in having terror threats listed in foreign government’s travel advice to their citizens. UK and US travel advisories also state there’s high likelihood of terror attacks in many Western European nations,” he said.
“Indeed, the UK and US advice to their respective citizens for travel to one another’s countries contain the same warning. Unfortunately, terror is a reality the world over.
“However, it does not mean an attack in Abuja is imminent. Since the July prison raid, security measures have been reinforced in and around the FCT. Heightened monitoring and interception of terrorist communications ensure potential threats are caught further upstream.

“Attacks are being foiled. Security agents are proactively rooting out threats to keep citizens safe – much of their work unseen and necessarily confidential.
“Nigerians’ safety remains the highest priority of government. Security services are working around the clock to keep harm at bay.”
