The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority has warned against crossing the rail tracks as they will be powered by electricity.
According to the agency, crossing the rail tracks when it is powered will mean instant death.
This was revealed in a video issued on the matter by the government.
The agency said in the video, “Unlike the train system, driven with diesel engine which most Nigerians are conversant with. The Blue line will be powered by electricity, thus crossing the track will no longer be an option.
“The blue line will use the power known as the third rail electrification system. The third rail works by directly attaching a current carrying conductor to the rail tracks, which means the entire length of the track will be electrified. That means the train will be propelled by the electricity passing through the road tracks which is about 750 volts; an amount of power three times more than electricity been utilised for domestic use.
“Crossing the track when the rail track is in operation early 2023 will mean instant death. We appeal that you make use of the pedestrian bridges which have been provided to cross the ten-lane Lagos-Badagry Expressway. The pedestrian bridge has the ability to take commuters into the train station, the bus station as well as to cross the expressway. Please, avoid going close to the tracks, your safety is important to us.”
Meanwhile, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has stated that the rail line will be powered by an Independent Power Project for a long-term sustainability.
He tweeted, “Lagos, We have done it. As I sat in the beautiful air-conditioned coach today, I smiled. A promise that has kept me up at night has finally been completed.
“The first phase of the Blue Line Metro station running from Mile 2 to Marina has now been completed.
“126 years after the first tram system that connected the mainland to the island, this first phase of the Blue Line is done.
“COVID 19, civil unrests and other incidents that meant work had to shutdown for months came but we were determined to pursue this to its completion.
“In January 2023, this project will be commissioned, beginning operations and also simultaneously flagging off the construction of Phase 2 (Mile 2 to Okoko).
“For long-term sustainability, we have developed an Independent Power Project which supplies electricity for the Metro line.”
