The ongoing nationwide protest against police brutality, extortion and extra-judicial killings has now turned violent in the Surulere area of Lagos State, leaving at least two dead and several injured.
It turned violent after police officers shot indiscriminately to disperse the protesters and along the line, two of the protesters were hit by gunshots.
The protesters have since shared pictures and videos of the victims on social media as they scamper for safety.
“I heard several shots at the back of my office, two protesters died and several were injured, we are being careful right now” an eyewitness told Kemi Filani News
In the viral video as seen below, a young man dressed in a red T-shirt and black trouser gave up after efforts by young medics failed.
Footage showed the medics struggling to keep him alive with drip and other equipment.
Another was filmed with a bullet lodged in his thigh.
Armed policemen are at strategic positions firing live rounds.
Addressing the nation for the first time in about a two-minute broadcast uploaded on his verified Twitter handle, President Buhari amid the ongoing nationwide protests against the brutality and extrajudicial killings by men of the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force, said the disbandment of the police unit was a first step to “extensive police reforms”.
“I will like to use this opportunity to say a word on the recent genuine concerns and agitations by Nigerians about the excessive use of force and in some cases extra-judicial killings and wrongful conduct of the men of the Nigerian Police Force.
“The disbanding of SARS is only the first step in our commitment to extensive police reforms in order to ensure that the primary duty of the police and other law enforcement agencies remains the protection of lives and livelihood of our people.
“We will also ensure that all those responsible for misconduct or wrongful acts are brought to justice.
