The Supreme Court has reinstated the Oyo Local government chairmen sacked by Governor Seyi Makinde in 2019.
Kemi Filani recalls that Governor Makinde sacked the local government chairmen appointed into office during the immediate past regime of the late Governor, Abiola Ajimobi in 2018.
Governor Makinde had sacked them shortly after assuming office and replaced them with caretaker chairmen.
The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in the state and the opposition party kicked against the governor’s move but he refused to rescind his decision, leaving the affected chairmen no option other than to approach the court.
Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), also intervened and declared Governor Makinde’s action as unconstitutional. Two months ago, Makinde dissolved the council caretaker committees following the expiration of their tenure.
The apex court has, however, ruled against the governor, describing his actions as unlawful.
The Supreme court on Friday, May 7, declared the dissolution of local government councils in Oyo state as illegal, a report by The Nation stated and has now instructed the Oyo State government to clear all outstanding salaries owed.
