Former UEFA president, Michel Platini has been arrested by French police for awarding the 2022 world cup to Qatar.
Report say the French football legend was taken into custody on Tuesday as investigations continue concerning the awarding of the 2022 world cup to Qatar. He was taken to the Anti-Corruption Office of the Judicial Police (OCLCIFF).
Platini admitted in 2014 that he held a meeting with disgraced football official Mohamed Bin Hammam. This was shortly before he casted his vote to make Qatar the official host of the 2022 world cup.
Following the announce which many found to be controversial, human rights concern and many others raised issues concerning the choice of the peninsula Arab country due to its stance on homosexuality.
Platini was elected UEFA president in 2007 and remained in office until 2015 after a ban came from FIFA Ethics Committee.
He and former FIFA president Sepp Blatter were banned from participating in all activities related to football for eight years.
Speaking last year, Platini revealed in a controversial manner that France and Brazil were fixed to meet in the final of 1998 World Cup.
“France-Brazil in the final, it was the dream of everyone,” Platini told radio station France Bleu Sport per Telegraph.
He added: “There was a little trickery. We did not spend six years organising the World Cup to not do some little shenanigans. Do you think other World Cup hosts did not?”
