Former Barcelona coach, Luis Enrique has been named Spain’s new boss following the pre-World Cup sacking of Julen Lopetegui. He will be taking over from Fernando Hierro who manned affairs of the team after Julen was sacked.
Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales said the decision to appoint Luis Enrique was unanimous. “We liked his commitment and he has turned down better paid jobs to coach the Spanish national team.”
“He’s a coach who has all the requirements the federation was looking for.”
According to the reports in Spain, it emerged on Sunday that Rubiales was to put forward Lopetegui’s successor to the RFEF’s board on Monday and, not long after doing as such, Luis Enrique’s appointment was made official.
Luis Enrique is taking over after the Spanish team was knocked out of the World Cup at the last-16 stage on penalties by hosts Russia.
Enrique has played for Real Madrid and Barcelona and has won the La Liga, Spanish Cup and Champions League treble as Barca manager in 2015.
His first game in charge of the Spanish national team will be a Uefa Nations League game away to England at Wembley on 8 September.
The RFEF announced his appointment on Monday and also named Jose Francisco Molina, a former Spain keeper, as their sporting director after Fernando Hierro failed to return to his position as sporting director.
