The death toll from the cholera outbreak in Nasarawa State has hit 59. This is as the state record 892 cases of the disease within the last six months.
The Director, Public Health in the State Ministry of Health, Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Alhassan who disclosed this to journalists recently, said that the disease has been reported in eight out of the 13 local government areas in the State.
He said the affected areas are Doma, Lafia, Wamba, Kokona, Obi, Nasarawa, Toto and Karu.
Dr. Alhassan cited open defecation and lack of potable drinking water as causes of the outbreak of the deadly disease in the state.
He assured that the state government had taken “necessary measures” to contain further spread of the disease. This he said the government is doing through a “multi sectoral approach.”
He urged residents to maintain hygienic practices and report cases promptly to the relevant facilities, even as he assured them of the state government’s commitment to expanding sensitisation campaigns and identification of the affected communities to provide them with motorized boreholes, among others.
