Hours after President Buhari declared June 12 as Nigeria’s new Democracy Day in honour of Chief M.K.O Abiola who was the winner of 1993 presidential election, many had predicted that the decision would influence the decision of the Abiola family as well as Nigerians from the West, as regards the upcoming 2019 Presidential elections
As at this time, the President who was yet declare his political intentions for the elections had warmed the hearts of many with the new decision, however, others were of the opinion that there was indeed a motive
Whether a fact or not, the issue of President Buhari’s second term remains a sensitive subject, and a recent declaration by one of Abiola’s sons might put that saga to rest.
Chief MKO Abiola’s son, Abdulmumuni Abiola, has said the country is not ripe for a youth president.
Abiola told journalists at the maiden national youth summit organised by The Zealous Kwara Youths in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Saturday, that though he was hopeful that a youth could become president someday, it was imperative to give President Muhammadu Buhari a second chance, The Punch reports.
Declaring his support for the current President, He said:
“I do believe that there shall be a time, just like in Canada and France, when we have somebody that is around 30 in power. I don’t just think that time is right. I think there is a reason why Buhari is there and I would want us to be patient to see him through.
We should give him another four years and he will handover power to the youth
“I do not have anybody else to campaign for. Somebody after 20 years honoured my father and did what other people refused to do, so I am supporting Buhari for a second term.”
The President of the ZKY, Mr John Adegboyega, said it was necessary to sanitise Nigeria of corrupt practises.
Adegboyega added that 2019 was not yet time for a youth to become president.
He said the youth should participate actively in the political process and elect people who would deliver good governance and move the country forward.
