The Inspector-General of Police, Adamu, has directed that Policemen be deployed to Ibadan, Oyo state to suppress the unrest and violence rising in the state.
Force Intelligence Bureau operatives and surveillance helicopter was also sent to the state to calm the situation.
Oyo has been recently razed with violence caused by clashes of herders and farmers, leading to killings, abductions, and destruction of lives and properties.
The Shasha market of the Oyo town has been razed by violence following the clash between farmers and Fulani-herdmen.
Speaking on the incident, Spokesman of the Police, Mr. Frank Mba, and the Commissioner of Police said in a statement on Monday that the operatives would be in charge of the public space, as security operatives would be deployed to the affected areas to rekindle public confidence.
“The deployments, consisting largely of intelligence and operational assets of the force, include four units of the Police Mobile Force, seasoned operatives from the Force Intelligence Bureau, and one operational/surveillance police helicopter from the Police Air-wing Department.
“The intervention force is being coordinated by a Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Mr. David Folawiyo, who is expected to mobilize all relevant stakeholders towards achieving the mandate of the squad,” it said.
The IG further assured the people that the government is committed to the safety of lives and properties.
Speaking to the residents of Oyo state and other Nigerians, the IGP urged the people to embrace peace and work with the Police to restore sanity and adequate security to the community, “as they redouble their efforts in ensuring that sustainable peace and security are restored to the affected areas.”
