The crescent moon which signals the commencement of the Islamic fasting period has been sighted. Nigerians will, however, have to wait for an official announcement from the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Saad Abubakar.
The news of the moon’s sighting was announced by presidential aide Bashir Ahmad on Friday
According to him, this means that the first fasting day of this year’s Ramadan will be on April 2.
He tweeted, “The Crescent of Ramadan 1443/2022 is seen in multiple locations in Saudi Arabia, subsequently 1st Ramadan 1443 will be on Saturday, 2nd April 2022.
“For Nigeria, we will have to wait for the announcement from the Sultan Palace later in the evening.
“Ramadan Mubarak!”
An official announcement is expected from the Sultan which should be issued any moment before April 2.
A statement issued by his palace had read:
“If the crescent is sighted by Muslims of impeccable character on the said evening, then His Eminence would declare Saturday, 2nd April 2022 as the first day of Ramadan 1443 AH.
“If, however, the crescent is not sighted that day, then, Sunday, 3rd April 2022, automatically becomes the first of Ramadan, 1443 AH.”
