Tragedy in Ogun: Truck crushes 8 secondary school students

Oh no! No fewer than 17 persons lost their lives in separate road crashes across Ogun State on Wednesday.

At Itori, in Ewekoro Local Government Area of the state, eight students of Itori Comprehensive High School lost their lives when a granite-laden truck travelling to Lagos, with registration number LAGOS XZ 628 AKD, swerved off its lane and rammed into the students who were returning home after school.

Eyewitness said no fewer than 50 vehicles were smashed by an angry mob, following the incident.

The bodies of the victims, according to the source, were crushed under the granite by the content.

The source added that an armoured personnel carrier (APC) arrived at the scene of the accident to forestall breakdown of law and order while the evacuation of the victims lasted.

Confirming the incident, the Itori unit commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Fatai Bakare, said only five students died in the accident.

He described the incident as unfortunate and urged motorists to be safety conscious at all times.

Also, four persons lost their lives in Olodo area, on the Abeokuta-Ibadan Expressway, in a collision involving a Toyota Camry marked LAGOS: MUS 984 AR and a Mazda with registration number LAGOS JP 602 AAA.

An eyewitness told the Nigerian Tribune that the incident was due to over speeding.

Iron materials were reported to have been used by sympathisers before the bodies of the victims could be evacuated from the vehicles.

The sector commander FRSC, Mr Ayobami Omiyale, confirmed the incident and attributed it to over speeding and dangerous driving.

In Ogere area of the state, five people were reported dead in an accident involving an articulated vehicle and four other vehicles.

The Ogere unit commander of the FRSC, Mr A. Sangbasa, confirmed the incident.
