Nigeria’s and Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, joins other prominent Nigerians to applaud and congratulate Nigeria’s former finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, following her emergence as the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation.
Breaking a 26-year record as the first African and first female DG of the World Trade Organisation, Dr. Ngozi has received several congratulatory messages from different persons worldwide.
Congratulating her, Dangote states that her emergence as ‘historic.’
In his tweet, he said, “We are proud of your historical emergence and confident in your ability to rebuild the World Trade Organisation and enhance global trade and economic development.”
According to the WTO, Dr. Ngozi Iweala would resume office on March 1, 2021, and her term would expire on the August 31, 2025.
Following her confirmation, the former World Bank Director explains that her primary priority is to work with members to speedily address the economic and health consequences that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought.
She said, “I am honored to have been selected by members as WTO director-general.
“A strong WTO is vital if we are to recover fully and rapidly from the devastation wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I look forward to working with members to shape and implement the policy responses we need to get the global economy going again.
“Our organization faces a great many challenges but working together, we can collectively make the WTO stronger, more agile, and better adapted to the realities of today.”
