It has been confirmed that former Vice President and PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar will be questioned by the Federal Government concerning allegations of corruption and the collapse of Bank PHB.
A source revealed to Punch Newspaper on Saturday night that the FG is not concerned with the political connotations that may be deduced from the investigation but it will continue once a decision has been made as regards the security or anti-graft agency that will handle the case – Department of State Services (DSS), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) or the Police.
According to the source, “The alleged crime was discovered by the government and though it could have happened earlier, there is no time limit to when a crime should he investigated.
“The government has the right to determine when a case is ripe for either investigation or even prosecution. That is the truth.
“In the coming week, a decisive action will be taken on the matter. Anybody can say whatever they like, but government is not bothered because we know we have a genuine case against the former vice president.”
Recall that on Friday, the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed had said that upon his return to Nigeria, Atiku would be questioned on his involvement in the Bank PHB collapse.
Mohammed said that there were fresh evidences that Atiku benefitted from the slush funds that led to the collapse of the bank. In 2009, he said that a memo was raised for the issuance and payment of N156 million to Atiku’s account.
“We want him to stay in the US for as long as he wants but he has to explain to Nigerians when he returns,” he said.
