The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has met with his Sokoto State and Bauchi State counterparts, Aminu Tambuwal and Bala Mohammed respectively, and also the immediate past Senate President, Bukola Saraki.
The leaders, who are all members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, met in Benin, the Edo State capital on Monday.
According to Obaseki on Facebook, the meeting was hinged on reaching a consensus for the PDP which is yet to put forward a presidential candidate for the 2023 election.
Saraki and Tambuwal are believed to be nursing presidential ambitions and are likely going to go against each other at the PDP primaries.
Giving a hint about their meeting, Obaseki said he harped on the need for Nigeria to have a leader who will unite the country.
He wrote, “Earlier today, I received leading presidential aspirants of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including two of my counterpart Governors, Aminu Tambuwal and Bala Mohammed, of Sokoto and Bauchi States respectively; former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and foremost economist, Alhaji Mohammed Hayatudeen.
“I emphasized that Nigeria is in dire need of a leader with the capacity to unite and rebuild the nation, during the discussions with my guests towards reaching a consensus on our party’s zoning formula ahead of the 2023 general elections.
“For us in Edo, we are ready for building a bigger, stronger and better Nigeria as we cannot continue the way we are today. We are concerned that except the PDP comes out and rallies around Nigerians, it will be difficult to pull Nigeria back from the brinks.”
