At the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Nigeria will be represented by 94 athletes in total.
This information was released in a statement on Wednesday that was signed by Manga Mohammed, the director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.
According to the statement, “The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development will present 94 athletes and 21 accompanying technical personnel that have qualified through several qualifications competitions overseas to carry the banner of our nation to the Games”
According to the statement, there will be 21 members of the technical staff travelling with the athletes to the Games, which are scheduled to take place from July 28 to August 8.
Nigeria will compete in nine different sports, including athletics, wrestling, judo, para-athletics, boxing, table tennis, para-table tennis, para-powerlifting, and weightlifting. Of the nine sports, athletics has the largest contingent with 33 athletes, followed by wrestling with 11.
The teams for boxing and weightlifting each have nine athletes, while para-powerlifting and table tennis each have eight.
While para-athletics and judo each have five and four athletes on their teams, the para-table tennis team has seven players.
The three cities of Lagos, Abuja, and Yenagoa are where the athletes are currently camped out for training.
Para-table tennis, table tennis, judo, and para-powerlifting athletes are in Lagos, while athletes competing for their country in weightlifting, athletics, boxing, and para-athletics are camped in Abuja.
Additionally, it was discovered that Team Nigeria will fly to Birmingham on July 22.
