Arsenal have hailed the Super Falcons after their defeat to England in the 2023 search Fifa Women’s World Cup round of 16.
The Falcons lost 4-2 to the Three Lionesses via penalty shootout after the 120 minutes ended in a stalemate at Lang Park in Brisbane, Australia.
Nigeria were sent home despite dominating the game and having the better chances to win it.
Falcons duo of Desire Oparanozie and Michelle Alozie missed the first two spot kicks with Chloe Kelly netting the decisive penalty to send England into the quarterfinals.
Arsenal’s new signing Alessia Russo and Lotte Wubben-Moy are part of the England squad for the competition.
Arsenal described the Nigerian team as ‘an excellent side’ while recalling how the African champions sent Olympic champions Canada out of the tournament.
Arsenal wrote on their official website; “The European champions were frustrated by an excellent Nigerian side, who had already knocked out the Olympic champions – Canada – in the group stage.
“Nigeria spent most of the first half in the ascendancy and saw their best chance, a powerful shot from Ashleigh Plumptre, rattle Mary Earps’ crossbar.”
