Daniel Akpeyi, the goalie for the Super Eagles, is now in training with Swallows FC of the South African Premier League and may sign a permanent contract with them if he performs well.
Akpeyi was released by PSL club Kaizer Chiefs when his contract expired in June. The 36-year-old shotstopper hasn’t had a club since that time.
But despite his regular training updates, Akpeyi hasn’t let up, showing that he’s still eager for action.
The former Chippa United player was said to be moving to Sekhukhune United of South Africa’s top division, however the team dismissed all the claims.
The Nigerian goalkeeper is now working out with Swallows FC, according to Goal South Africa, thus Akpeyi’s problems might soon come to an end.
David Mogashoa, the club’s chairman, further stated that if Akpeyi makes an impression, the team will sign him.
“Yes, Akpeyi is a very good goalkeeper, if he enjoys training with Swallows, then we will make it permanent,” Mogashoa told Goal South Africa.
Akpeyi would nevertheless like to see Swallows FC resolve its administrative problems. The club was recently prohibited from making moves until June 2024, but Mogashoa claimed they were already working on a solution.
Currently, Swallows are ranked 14th in the PSL log. They also have the league’s poorest defense, allowing 14 goals in eight games. However, they would hope that having Akpeyi on board would provide them some assurance in achieving their objective.
The side headed by Gernot Rohr that came in third in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt included Akpeyi.
