Since becoming a regular starter for German powerhouse Bayern Munich, Alphonso Davies has emerged as a star for the Canadian national team.
For both teams, Davies has developed into a dangerous and reliable player who is also adaptable, able to play on the wing as either a full-back or a more capable forward.
Any success Les Rouges have at the 2022 World Cup will be largely dependent on his ability to see the field for Canada.
Since he sustained an injury in the beginning of October while performing club duty, his availability is currently uncertain.
Alphonso Davies suffers skull bruise in Der Klassiker
Alphonso Davies reportedly sustained a “cranial bruise” on October 8 while playing against Borussia Dortmund, according to Bayern Munich.
The club stated that Davies was “caught in the face by the boot” of the Dortmund midfielder during a collision with Jude Bellingham just before halftime.
As a result, Josip Stanisic was introduced after Davies was taken off at halftime. Kingsley Coman’s dismissal in the 90th minute, which allowed Anthony Modeste to score the equaliser in the 95th, caused Bayern to blow a 2-0 lead in the game.
After leaving the field, Davies was taken to the hospital with what was likely a concussion. The most recent prognosis, however, seems to indicate that Davies avoided suffering a traumatic brain injury.
Bellingham only received a yellow card for the incident, which annoyed Bayern Munich because Kingsley Coman was later dismissed from the game. “Where was [referee] Dennis Aytekin’s empathy shown on the yellow [to Bellingham] when he showed a red card to Kingsley Coman,” the CEO of Bayern Munich asked on Twitter following the game.
Will Alphonso Davies be fit for the World Cup?
Davies’ injury has no estimated recovery time, according to Bayern Munich, who also stated that the Canadian “is feeling good in the circumstances” despite missing Sunday’s training session.
Davies should return in a week or two, barring a concussion in addition to the bruise. According to a report from German outlet Kicker (reported by popular Bayern Munich supporter account @MiaSanMia), Davies could make his Bundesliga debut as soon as next weekend, missing only the midweek Champions League match against Viktoria Plzen.
No additional significant damage was mentioned in the Bayern Munich injury release. However, Davies’ return might be in doubt if he did experience a concussion.
According to reports, Davies and Serge Gnabry, another injured teammate, took part in a brief training session with Bayern on Thursday, October 13. Even if he can’t go just yet, the news seems to be good for his chances at the World Cup, which doesn’t start for another five weeks. It’s believed that he will be ready to go for this weekend’s match against Freiburg on Sunday.
