Memphis Depay and Frenkie de Jong both sustained hamstring injuries while representing the Netherlands internationally, according to Barcelona.
Last Thursday’s Nations League victory over Poland featured De Jong and Memphis in the starting lineup. The former was taken off at halftime, while the latter was taken off around seven minutes into the second half as the Oranje won 2-0 in Warsaw.
Neither player was then named to the squad for the subsequent Nations League victory over Belgium in Amsterdam on Sunday night.
Barcelona medical tests on Monday afternoon revealed hamstring issues for both players, now that they have returned to club duty. Timetables for recovery have not yet been released.
A statement from the club explained: “Tests carried out have confirmed hamstring injuries for both Frenkie de Jong and Memphis.
“Midfielder Frenkie de Jong has an elongation of the semitendinosus muscle in his left thigh. He is not available for selection and his recovery will dictate his return.
“Striker Memphis has an injury to the biceps femoris muscle in his left thigh. He is not available for selection and his recovery will dictate his return.”
The news comes as a disappointment to Barcelona coach Xavi, who has started De Jong in the club’s last two La Liga games. Memphis has also started both of those games after initially being benched and out of favour earlier in the season.
Barça’s next match is on Saturday in Mallorca, followed by a Champions League away trip to San Siro against Inter.
