Manchester City have condemned racist abuse directed at 17-year-old goalscorer Rico Lewis by Sevilla fans during Wednesday’s Champions League victory at Etihad Stadium.
Police, according to City, have made two arrests and are looking into the matter.
“We will not tolerate discrimination of any kind at our stadium,” City said.
Sevilla stated that if the case is established, they will take their own disciplinary action against the two offenders.
The La Liga club added: “Sevilla FC strongly condemn the behaviour of two fans in the away section of Manchester City’s stadium, who were identified and accused of allegedly behaving in a racist manner towards Manchester City player Rico Lewis.
“Sevilla FC are awaiting official confirmation of these facts, of which they have been made aware by Manchester City, and if these are proven, the two fans will be removed from the list of members.”
The Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium in Sevilla was said to have never witnessed any “racist or xenophobic episodes,” and the team’s “fans have always been committed to the fight against racism.”
Lewis scored the Blues’ equaliser in their 3-1 group-stage victory over Sevilla to mark his full debut.
With the goal, Karim Benzema was surpassed as the youngest player to score on his first start in the Champions League by Lewis, a Bury native who joined the club at age eight and has since advanced through the City academy.
