Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola, has bemoaned his team’s poor record from the penalty spot.
This follows their goalless draw with Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
City had a golden chance to wrap up three points when Emre Can tripped Mahrez over inside the area, giving the visitors a stonewall penalty.
However, the Algerian missed his second Champions League penalty of the season, seeing his effort well-saved by Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
“Of course it’s a problem,” Guardiola told BT Sport of the miss.
“Since I was here we missed 24 or 25 penalties, most of them in Champions League, it’s too much.
“I always admire the courage, the responsibility to do it. But we miss a lot of penalties. We have to improve. The little details and margins in this competition is the key, the difference.
“Riyad scored a lot in big important moments, here [in 2021 Champions League quarter-finals]. If he feels it next time, he is going to take it. But we have to improve.”
However, a point was enough for both sides, who both go into the hat for the last 16 draw.
Guardiola angry after Liverpool defeat
Guardiola accused Liverpool fans of throwing “coins” at him after a goal by Man City is disallowed because Erling Haaland was penalized.
The incident allegedly took place in the 53rd minute of the game at Anfield. Phil Foden thought he had given City the lead with a close-range shot. Only for the goal to be disallowed for a foul by Erling Haaland in the build-up.
Liverpool players immediately surrounded referee Anthony Taylor, alleging that Haaland had kicked the ball out of Alisson’s hands.
When Taylor was directed to check his pitch side monitor, he was instructed to look at an earlier incident involving Haaland.
Replays show that before challenging Alisson, the Norwegian got into a collision with Fabinho. And Haaland punched the Brazilian in the shirt, knocking him to the ground.
After the goal was overturned, Guardiola, the manager of City, lost it.
Then, as a cynical attempt to get the Liverpool fans behind him to boo him more, Guardiola was spotted reacting to them by waving his hands in the air.
After appearing to be upset at an incident involving Salah and Bernardo Silva in the second half, Jurgen Klopp, manager of Liverpool, was dismissed by referee Taylor for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Liverpool’s upcoming match against West Ham United on Wednesday is likely to be missed by Klopp.
