Chelsea won the Women’s FA Cup 3-2 in extra time over Manchester City on Sunday, completing the double this season after winning the Super League title the week before.
City had equalized twice, once via Lauren Hemp following Sam Kerr’s opening and again at the end when Hayley Raso cancelled out Erin Cuthbert’s screamer. Kerr, on the other hand, scored early in the opening session of extra time to give Chelsea their fourth FA Cup.
It is Chelsea’s 11th major prize under Emma Hayes since she came over in 2012.
Around the half-hour mark at a damp Wembley, the holders took the lead with a header from Australian striker Kerr following a deep cross from Millie Bright. They were held back, though, by a stunning finish by City forward Hemp soon before halftime.
Around the hour mark, Chelsea midfielder Cuthbert thundered a long-range strike in off the crossbar to reclaim the lead, and it appeared like it would be enough to win as the clock ticked down.
Gareth Taylor’s City, on the other hand, never gave up, and in the 89th minute, a long cross-field ball from Alex Greenwood was brilliantly brought down by Australian Raso, who sprinted towards goal and blasted in the equalizer to send the game to extra time.
City pushed for a goal but were undone nine minutes into the first quarter when Kerr scooped up the ball in her own half and sprinted towards goal before her effort was blocked.
Chelsea then held off City to win the FA Cup for the second time in a row in front of 49,094 supporters, breaking the previous record of 45,423 established in 2018.
