Todd Boehly, the new owner of Chelsea, is expected to give head coach Thomas Tuchel complete control over the type of players the club acquires.
This is in stark contrast to the Chelsea tradition under Roman Abramovich, where the coach was only consulted but the club had final say.
The new owner, an American, appears to have hit the ground running, aiming to uphold the high standards set by his predecessor. He is also expected to make available close to 200 million euros for Tuchel to sign new players, according to the Daily Mail.
The majority of that money will be spent on signing new defenders. Chelsea have lost free agents Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger. Since then, he has joined Real Madrid, the Champions League champions.
Boehly now wants Tuchel to recommend the players he wants to Marina Granovskaia, the sporting director, and Petr Cech, the performance advisor, who will make sure Tuchel gets the players he wants.
Chelsea’s rivals Manchester City and Liverpool play in a similar style. Final decisions on players arriving at the Etihad and Anfield stadiums are made by Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp, respectively.
Tuchel is reportedly interested in signing Jules Kounde of Sevilla and Josko Gvardiol of RB Leipzig as defensive replacements.
