England women’s national team coach, Sarina Wiegman, has responded to speculation she could replace Gareth Southgate as manager of the men’s football team.
Wiegman has led England to the final of this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand where they will face Spain in Sunday’s final in Sydney.
The Dutchman also managed England to European Championship glory last summer.
For this reason, there have been speculations that the 53-year-old could take over Southgate as England men’s manager when he is expected to step down from the role following next year’s Euros.
But during her pre-match press conference ahead of the final showdown, Wiegman said the speculation was keen to divert attention back to tomorrow’s World Cup final.
“I have nothing to say about that,” she said. “Let’s just talk about the final tomorrow.
“We have felt all the support – we have felt support here but also from the other side of the world in the UK. That is something that you dream of.
“It’s incredible what has happened and we just hope we play our best game ever tomorrow and that everyone who is watching in the stadium and in the UK also, and every place else, can support us and enjoy it.”
