Michael Edwards and Chelsea have had additional discussions regarding the vacant position of sporting director, but the former Liverpool executive is adamant he won’t work again this year.
Todd Boehly, the new co-owner of Chelsea, was very impressed by Edwards’ exceptional transfer record during his time at Liverpool. Edwards, who left Anfield this summer after 11 years with the club, was one of Boehly’s top targets.
The Blues tried to contact Edwards this summer, but he had already stated that he was not interested in working this year. Sources have now confirmed to 90min that another attempt to contact the 43-year-old has also failed.
Chelsea is now resuming their search for a sporting director and decided to get in touch with Edwards once more to clarify whether he might be tempted to return to work or not. A deal for a technical director is almost complete; Christopher Vivell has agreed to join after his abrupt departure from RB Leipzig.
Edwards emphasised that he still intended to postpone his trip until 2023. Boehly is looking into a deal that would have the former Liverpool executive oversee Chelsea’s hiring beginning on July 1.
Edwards’ interest in such a deal is not yet clear, and Chelsea is still considering all of their options before making a decision, which sources do not believe is imminent.
