Following the reports of two backroom departures on Thursday, Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool’s shock upheaval is “a worry.”
Kemi Filani News reports that Julian Ward, who took over for Michael Edwards as sporting director a year ago, is widely believed to have decided to resign from his position after the current season.
The Athletic then reported that Ian Graham, Liverpool’s director of research, had also given notice of his resignation and would be serving it until the end of May.
In a time when the club’s ownership may also change, Jurgen Klopp’s team is left to fill significant positions in the club hierarchy. FSG is looking to attract new investors by selling a minority stake and may even be open to discussing a full sale.
Carragher is concerned about these changes because of the crucial role that these individuals play in the club’s efforts to bring in new players.
“It’s not ideal as when you are talking about recruiting players a person in that role is heavily involved not just for the January window but in the summer too,” he told Sky Sports.
“It does feel like a shock. It is a little bit of a worry for Liverpool.
“There seems to be upheaval behind the scenes in terms of the ownership.
“Michael Edwards moved on and Ward came in to replace him and now he’s gone.
“It won’t be easy to get someone straight away as Liverpool won’t be prepared for this. Hopefully, someone fills the role and has as much success as they’ve had in the past.”
After a disappointing start to the season, Liverpool needs to rebound after the World Cup. They are currently sixth in the Premier League, seven points behind the top four, and 15 points behind league leaders Arsenal.
