EPL: Manchester City star Phil Foden beats Bukayo Saka, others to win young player of the season
Phil Foden of Manchester City was chosen as the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season for the 2021/22 campaign.
The 21-year-old player was the first player to win the same award in consecutive seasons, making him the recipient of the award again this year. He won the award last year as well.
This is Foden’s first season with Manchester City, and he has already logged 27 Premier League appearances for the club. Pep Guardiola’s side is currently in first place in the standings with one game remaining in the season.
The multi-talented forward, who came up through the club’s youth system, has seen action for the Citizens both as an attacking midfielder and as a member of the attack, during which he has scored nine goals.
Foden was able to beat out the other players who were up for consideration for the award, including Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Conor Gallagher (Crystal Palace on loan from Chelsea), Tyrick Mitchell (Crystal Palace), Mason Mount (Chelsea), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal), Declan Rice (West Ham), and Bukayo Saka
Before Foden’s string of victories beginning a year later and continuing with this campaign, Alexander-Arnold took home the inaugural version of the award in the year 2020.
The winner of the award was determined through a process that included voting from members of the general public as well as votes from a group of football specialists.
“I am very proud to have won this award for a second season in a row,” Foden said.
“There are so many talented young players in the Premier League this season and it is a real honour to win it again.
“I have been really happy with my performances this season and it has been great to contribute to this team in what will hopefully be another successful year for us all.
“To be nominated alongside so many great players is an honour as they have all had great seasons for their clubs.
“I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to my development this season.”
