EPL: Reactions as Southampton end Arsenal’s winning streak with a 1-1 draw at St Mary’s

On Sunday afternoon at St. Mary’s, Arsenal’s impressive winning streak came to an end as the Gunners could only draw 1-1 with Southampton.

Granit Xhaka’s precise finish in the box gave the guests the lead after they had dominated the first 45 minutes.

Gabriel Jesus had the opportunity to help them increase their lead, but he wasted three good chances.

Stuart Armstrong scored the equalizer for Southampton in the second half following some outstanding effort from Mohamed Elyounoussi.

Following that, the Saints continued to play, and Arsenal—who are still two points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League—appeared worn out and content to escape with a point.

For the first time since February, Southampton has gone three Premier League games without suffering a loss (W1 D2) (a run of five).

For the first time since New Year’s Day versus Man City, Arsenal lost a Premier League game in which they scored first (1-2 loss). Previously, they had won 18 straight such games.

Southampton’s goal scorer, Stuart Armstrong while speaking to Sky Sports reacted to the game.

He said: “It was always going to be a hard game against a good opposition. Not the perfect start for us and still, we had to defend and wait for counter-attacks, that was the rhythm of the game.

“But to get a point against the great teams is obviously amazing for us.”

Arsenal Manager, Mikel Arteta also reacted to the game. He stated that the result was disappointing as they had many chances but couldn’t convert any.

“We had three or four good opportunities and should have scored more. We needed two or three goals, but only scored one.

“It’s disappointing. We created enough chances but couldn’t put the ball away.

“It’s a lesson because we wanted to win again. They put us under more pressure through direct play in the second half, and we were struggling,” Arteta told BBC.
