Tottenham’s decision to sign Clement Lenglet has been explained, and one reporter believes Antonio Conte has his sights set on a much greater prize.
On Tuesday morning, Spurs added one more summer arrival to their list of six. Djed Spence of Middlesbrough was the most recent to arrive for an initial £12.5 million.
Spurs have added players at goalkeeper, right wing-back, center-half, left wing-back, centre midfield, and in the forward line as a result of Spence’s arrival.
For Spurs supporters who are used to seeing their club scramble in the closing stages of windows, their early business is a welcome change.
Antonio Conte reportedly gave the order to get their house in order as soon as possible, according to The Athletic. For new hires to fully adapt to their manager’s tactical demands and system, preseasons are crucial.
However, Dharmesh Sheth of Sky Sports believes that one signing in particular, Clement Lenglet, might only be a temporary solution.
Sheth initially reacted negatively when Spence brought the total number of arrivals to six, saying: “Tottenham fans must be thinking, ‘what is going on in this transfer window’ because normally they’re used to waiting until the last week or deadline day to complete their signings.
“But there has been a real push from Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici to say, ‘we want to get our business done early, we’re now in the Champions League and a different market than we were in before’.
“When you look at the six signings they’ve made, this is turning into Conte and Paratici’s Tottenham. Signing a player like Ivan Perisic is a signing Conte would’ve pushed for, Fraser Forster is cover for Hugo Lloris.”
