Manchester United have reportedly agreed a £46 million deal for Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez, leaving three Old Trafford stars vulnerable.
United have so far had a difficult summer transfer period. While they have added Tyrell Malacia as a new left-back, they have yet to add anyone else to their squad.
Erik ten Hag, the new manager of United, is drawing transfer ideas from his connections at his former club Ajax.
The ex-Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong and the Brazilian forward Antony are on the Dutchman’s wish list. But as things stand, Martinez is most likely to be signed by Manchester United.
For the 24-year-old, the Red Devils’ offers of £38 million and £43 million were turned down. Ajax reportedly increased their asking price to close to £50 million after initially feeling no pressure to sell.
Martinez is reportedly close to being acquired by United for £46 million, according to the Daily Mirror.
Since the start of preseason across Europe, Martinez has tightened the screws, telling Ajax that he wants to leave and that he needs a deal completed as soon as possible.
And it was his actions that caused Ajax to falter. Wednesday’s meeting between United executives and their Ajax counterparts resulted in the agreement.

The two clubs have a “broad agreement,” according to the source, regarding the €55 million fee.
An earlier £38 million bid from Arsenal put them squarely in the running for the Argentina international.
But in recent weeks, they have focused on a move for Alex Grimaldo of Benfica.
